The chilly weather at their lakeside cottage property has brothers Andrew and Kevin opening their minds and their pores to the ceremony of sweat that is the sauna. But knowing the bros, it’s not just going to be any old sauna – not when Andrew insists that the key to a truly amazing sauna is the ability to jump from the heat directly into the cold lake. They conclude that the only sensible thing to do is to make a sauna with immediate access to the deepest, coldest parts of the lake – the Ultimate Floating Sauna.

Project Steps

Step 4

As with all our previous broventions, we like to start at the planning stage. In this case, we made a highly detailed model of the sauna using popsicle sticks. We figured the most important element was the stove — and luckily we had a great wood-burning one kicking around the cottage. For the base, we debated whether to build on top of a single 12′ x 8′ floating dock, or sandwich two slightly smaller floating dock sections together with joists in the middle to create one large platform. We decided on the latter plan as it gave us more room and stability. With our docks already in the water, we knew we had our work cut out for us!
